Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, also named as Rong, is a deputy provincial city and mega-cities of China. It is the base of western China theater headquarters and has been positioned as the country’s major high-tech industrial base, logistics center and transportation hub as well as the important center city in middle-western region of China.
Chengdu is located between 30º 05´-31º 26´ of north latitude and 102º54´-104º53´ of east longitude. It lies in the middle of Sichuan Province, in the west of the Sichuan Basin and at the center of the Chengdu plains. Chengdu borders on De Yang to the northeast, Zhi Yang to the southeast, Ya An to the southeast, Mei Shan to the south, and A Pa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefectures to the northwest. Its longest distance from east to west is 192 km by 166 km from south to north. Its total area is 12,390 Sq. km.. Chengdu is located in the western of Sichuan Basin, the hinterland of Chengdu Plain with flat terrain, river network, rich products and agriculture development in its territory. It has been recognized as the “the land of abundance”.
Chengdu is the homeland of the giant panda, which is reputed as a living fossil and a national treasure. It is the symbol of world peace and friendship. Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the only conservation and research center for the giant panda that is located in a metropolis. The giant panda here serves as a bridge of friendship between Chengdu and the rest of the world. Here you can have an intimate contact with these cute creatures and feel the beauty of people living in harmony with nature.
Chengdu is also the original place of ancient Shu’s culture. Jinsha Ruins and Sanxingdui Site are demonstrating the mystery, glory and charm of ancient Shu’s culture. Dujiangyan Irrigation System -Mt.Qingcheng, famous for water resources and Taoism respectively. The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, which was built 2,000 years ago as the first irrigation works without dams in the world, is still in operation. It is regarded as the Wonder of World in the history of human’s civilization. And Qincheng Mountain, the original place of Taoism, is reputed as ‘the most tranquil place under heaven’. Besides, Chengdu has Wuhou Shrine which is famous for the culture of Three Kindom, has Dufu Cottage which is famous for its culture of poem, has Wenshu Temple which is famous for its culture of Buddhism, has Tianfu Old Town, such as Huanglongxi, Pingle, Anren, Jiezi, which are famous for folk customs.
The economy of Chengdu has been growing substantially since the national implementation of the National Western Development Program for more than 10 years. The regional GDP of the city achieved 910.89 billion in the year of 2013, with an increase of 10.2%. Main economic indicators rank top among all sub-provincial cities, including the economy growth, growth rate of above-scale industrial added value and export trade growth rate. Chengdu’s implementation of the five city prosperity strategies and creation of the Core Economic Growth Pole in Western China gained progress.
In recent years, to build Chengdu into an international metropolis and regional center, the city is sparing no effort to implement its strategy of opening the entire area by utilizing these five opportunities, which are the New Round of Western Development Program, Pilot Zone of National Rural and Urban Coordination, accelerating the construction of Tianfu New Area, Optimization of National Hi-tech Industry Development Zone and the North City Reconstruction Project. Chengdu has become the best choice for investors both domestic and abroad due to its advantages in various aspects, including pleasant living environment, advanced logistics system, solid industrial foundation, abundant talents, complete financial services, efficient government services and good infrastructure facilities, etc. In 2013, the actual foreign investment in place hit USD 8.758 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 5.26%, ranking top among all western cities.
